Guwahati: Assam government has decided to increase excise duty on Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) products by 25 percent. The Cabinet took a decision regarding this at its meeting held on Friday.

The increase in MRP by 25 percent would help the government earn an additional Rs 1000 crore as revenue, official sources said.

The Sentinel had reported on Thursday that Assam government has already spoken to Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh governments regarding raising taxes on liquor and the three states would be doing so together to ensure fair play. The other two states are also likely to raise the taxes on liquor by 25 per cent.

A notification in this regard is expected soon.
