BONGAIGAON: Several vegetable vendors gathered in the market on Tuesday while blatantly disobeying lockdown guidelines in Bongaigaon district, which falls under orange zone. As a result, police had to resort to baton charge. The incident took place in the Dhontola market area under Bidyapur police outpost of Bongaigaon district where more than 300 vegetable vendors gathered on Tuesday morning.

Dewan Hormuz Ali, IC of Bidyapur outpost, said that there were frequent complaints of mass gathering and setting up market for selling vegetables in this area since the lockdown began. "Several times we caught them and asked them not to break lockdown rules. As door-to-door vegetable supply facility is available here, we asked them not to set up market. But all our requests went in vain.

The vegetable vendors frequently set up market and when we reach there, they always mange to flee. Today when we reached there after getting complaint of market being set up, we noticed a gathering of more than 300 people along with about 100 bicycles. We drove them away.

The vendors ran away leaving the vegetables on road," he said. A source said that police resorted to baton charge to chase away the crowd.
