Wild elephant succumbs to injuries in Kaziranga National Park (KNP)

NUMALIGARH: A wild elephant was severely injured by some unidentified miscreants in Kaziranga National Park (KNP) almost two weeks ago.

Wild elephants usually come out to human populated areas and villages in the fringe areas in search of food. These elephants are often called crop raiders by the local communities. This wild elephant was also attacked by some miscreants when it came out from the protected areas of Kaziranga National Park in search of food. The front leg on the left side of the elephant was wounded very severely, giving it unbearable pain. The elephant was seen roaming around in different places of the park since then.

Last Monday, the injured elephant was detected near the Teteliguri Forest camp under Kohora range. It was stuck in a muddy deep drain. A team of CWRC and foresters reached the spot and tried to recover the injured elephant from the drain with help of the forest department elephants but did not succeeded. But the team helped the injured elephant with medication in the location. Veterinarian Dr Samshul Ali said that the front leg on the left side of the elephant was wounded very severely and the bones were totally broken. So he could not get up despite the several attempts of recovery by the foresters. According to Dr. Samshul Ali, the elephant might have broken his front leg in a fight with some other elephants. On Tuesday afternoon, the elephant succumbed to its wounds on the spot where it was last seen on Monday. After the incident, the wildlife activist groups are seeking strong protection measures for all the animals that often come out from the protected areas of Kaziranga in search of food.
