GUWAHATI, May 2: Nikhil Paul (45), hailing from Dudnoi in Sialmari, was strangulated by four persons just for Rs 70,000 on April 15, 2017. His body was thrown into the Brahmaputra.
Hatigaon police, through mobile CDR alysis and investigation, has successfully ‘solved’ the murder case and arrested three of the four accused. One of the accused is still at large.
It was on April 15 this year when Nikhil came to Guwahati with Rs 70,000 to buy autorickshaws. He used to sell old autorickshaws after giving them a facelift through repair. On the fateful day he went straight to Hatigaon in the city with his colleagues to buy autorickshaws. However, he failed to get any to buy. He was returning home frustrated. He had communication with his family members on way back home till Jalukbari. However, all of a sudden, his mobile phone was switched off at Jalukbari, sending his family members to a bout of jitters. He did not return home, and that led his family members to lodge an FIR for his missing at Hatigaon police station on April 16. A case (200/17) was registered at the police station.
The police banked on mobile CDR alysis and investigation to track Nikhil and his colleagues. Making a major breakthrough into the investigation, a team of police from Haitgaon police station and Goalpara police station went to Xatrakara in Barpeta yesterday and arrested one Abdul Hamid there. Based on the confessiol statement of Hamid, the police arrested two others – Rafiqul Haque from Boragaon in Guwahati and Khalilur Rahman from Jalukbari. Both Rafiqul and Khalilur are from Xatrakara in Barpeta, and Rafiqul was known to Nikhil. The fourth accused is still at large.
The arrested trio confessed before the police that they had drunk together with Nikhil at Jalukbari on April 15 night. When Nikhil wanted to go home, they prevented him from doing that with the promise that they would mage an autorickshaw for him, instantly. From there the trio took Nikhil to the Jalukbari Bypass and reassured him of maging an autorickshaw, and if need be, they themselves would accompany him to Dudnoi. Trio made Nikhil to drink more there and took him to the bank of the Brahmaputra via Lankeswar through the Bypass. They used a gamosa to strangulate Nikhil, threw his body into the river and decamped with Rs 70,000 he had in his pocket.
All the four accused killers have been staying at various places in Guwahati on rent.
