Elephant calf rescued at Udalguri

TANGLA, May 27: At a time when the man-elephant conflict is at its peak in Indo-Bhutan Udalguri, a male elephant calf that had been separated from the natal herd was rescued from a trench in 9 No. sector of Orangajuli Tea Estate in Udalguri district on Saturday. The nine-year old tusker fell into a deep trench and turned upside down in the morning hours. The quick efforts of local youths and management of Nonaipara TE, a unit of Goodricke Tea Company, saved the tusker. The trench had to be levelled with excavators in presence of forest guards, making an exit for the calf and it walked to meet its herd after hours.

Honourary Wildlife Warden Jayanta Kr. Das lauded the efforts of Nonaipara tea garden management, including senior manager Paran Jyoti Das and assistant manager Niraj Moni Chourasia for timely action. The tea estate is part of an area that has been used as natural corridor by elephant herds of the Indo-Bhutan landscape since their existence in the habitat. Elephant herds are accustomed to using tea garden alleys/channels as passage ways when moving through such areas.
