Ferry Services in River Island Majuli suspended for indefinite period due to bad weather

Majuli: Following the heavy downpour and rise in the water level of River Brahmaputra, Ferry services suspended for an indefinite period from Tuesday in river island Majuli.

It is to be noted that the mighty Brahmaputra and other rivers in the state are flowing above danger level in various parts of the state.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above 85.52 cm at Nimatighat in upper Assam’s Jorhat district on July 8th, 2019 whereas the marked danger level is 85.02 cm. Officials said the water level is increasing 2 cm per hour at Nimatighat.

According to Central Water Commission, Dhansiri is also flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh in Golaghat and Jia Bharali is flowing above the danger level at NT Rd Xing in Sonitpur district.

A total of five districts namely Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Jorhat and Golaghat have been affected adversely in the flood so far according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report.

Around 43 villages have been submerged and a total of 12631 people have been affected in the flood to date.

On the other hand, the water level in the upper catchment area of Ranganadi Hydro-Electric Plant (RHEP) located at Yazali is also rising. As a result, the management of the RHEP, operated by NEEPCO, has released excess water from the reservoir of the Ranganadi dam by opening it's Radial Gate No. 4 by 3000mm since 3 pm on Monday. Prior to it, the gate was opened by 200mm from 1.45 pm on the day. As a consequence, the water level of the downstream of the Ranganadi River is also rising.

Following this, the Lakhimpur district administration has issued an alert. By an order, Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Dr. Jeevan B. restricted movement on the bamboo bridges constructed over the Ranganadi River as per the Disaster Management Act in order to prevent any loss of life.
