Former Union Minister Arun Jaitley on life support, Confirms AIIMS sources

New Delhi: Former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) since August 9 and the latest reports on the former minister's health state that he has been kept on life support.

Officials, on Saturday, confirmed that Mr. Jaitley has been put on ECMO (Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation) and this life support system is also known as extracorporeal life support. In this support system, an extra-corporeal technique is used for providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support to a patient whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange or perfusion to sustain life. This indicates that Mr. Jaitley's health condition is particularly fragile and are under special monitoring of the doctors in AIIMS.

The present deteriorating health conditions of the politician has created a situation of tension and grief amongst the fellow political leaders. A number of leading political leaders from opposition like Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, BSP supremo Mayawati, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar have given a visit to AIIMS to have a detailed report on his health. Union minister Piyush Goyal, Congress leaders Abhishek Singhvi and Jyotiraditya Scindia were among the ones who were seen visiting AIIMS on Saturday.

Some of the leaders have even taken to express their prayers for good health and long life of Mr. Jaitley by making tweets. Mayawati, after her visit to ailing Mr. Jaitley, tweeted, "Went to AIIMS to enquire about the health condition of BJP veteran and former defence and finance minister Arun Jaitley. Met his family members to comfort them and prayed for his early recovery."

Among the party leaders visiting Mr. Jaitley in hospital on Friday, Home Minister Amit Shah and President Ram Nath Kovind were prominent.

Jaitley has been kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of AIIMS since August 9.
