NAGAON, June 22: A woman at Kathiatoli tea estate situated at Reng Beng in Nagaon district was trampled to death by a wild elephant on Friday morning when she went to take bath at a spring. According to sources, the victim has been identified as Malati Nayak (45). Interestingly, following the death of the woman, an irate mob of the Reng Beng area went on a rampage and blocked the NH-36 for several hours causing vehicles to come to a grinding halt for hours. The mob even brought the body of the victim to the road and staged a protest against Kathiatoli ranger Abdul Rough. The mob alleged that it happened because of the negligence of the ranger.

Earlier, on many occasions such mishaps happened due to the negligence of the ranger, they alleged. They alleged that whenever he was informed about movement of elephants, he always neglected and that Friday’s incident was the part of such negligence on his part. On the other hand, soon after a volatile situation emerged at Reng Beng, the local police rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. Later, the Superintendent of police, Nagaon Sankarbrata Raimedhi reached the spot and managed to bring the situation under control and was also able to send back the mob.
