Khasi Students’ Union member dies in Clash with non-tribals, Internet suspended for next 48 hours

Shillong: In a shocking incident, a Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) member, Lurshai Hynniewta was killed following a clash with non-locals at Ichamati, Shella under East Khasi Hills District on Friday evening.

As per info received after the meeting against CAA and demanding ILP, non-tribals cornered the KSU leaders; this led to a clash between the KSU activists and the non-tribals who were well armed with machetes and sticks.

In the melee many KSU activists from Sohra, Shella and adjoining areas were injured.

The president of the KSU was also attacked but was unhurt. The village head of Ichamati village and the police were also assaulted by the non-tribals. Many vehicles including buses were also vandalized in the clash.

Soon after the incident, the East Khasi Hills District the administration has imposed a curfew in the entire district including the capital city Shillong.

On the other hand, the Government of Meghalaya has suspended internet services for the next 48 hours in six districts of Meghalaya including East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Boi, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills.
