New Delhi: The Government of India on Friday announced Bharat Ratna for the legendary singer and son of soil Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Apart from Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Bharatiya Jana Sangh ideologue Nanaji Deshmukh and former President Pranab Mukherjee will be conferred with the country’s highest civilian honour on the Republic Day, 2019.

It may be mentioned that the late classical singer was born on September 8, 1926 and had passed away in 2011 on November 5.

He was widely hailed as 'Sudhakantha' and his songs were mostly written and sung in the Assamese language on themes revolving around humanity, empathy, communal amity and universal brotherhood and justice. His works have been translated into different languages.

Also, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi stating his happiness tweeted, "The songs and music of Shri Bhupen Hazarika are admired by people across generations. From them radiates the message of justice, harmony and brotherhood. He popularised India's musical traditions globally. Happy that the Bharat Ratna has been conferred on Bhupen Da."
