Lopamudra Devi: A tribute

Death is the ultimate truth, but it is not easy to accept the truth when a near one expires at a very early age. Our youngest sister Lopamudra Devi (Moni) breathed her last on October 30 after battling with cancer for more than two years.

Born in 1975, Lopamudra was the youngest daughter of Baladev Sarma and Dalimi Devi of Harabala Path, Ulubari and daughter-in-law of Devendra Goel and Kusum Goel in New Delhi.

Lopamudra had a brilliant academic career. She passed her HSLC from TC Girls’ HS School in 1990 and HS from Cotton College in 1994. While studying in TC School, she was awarded the ‘Gold Leaf’ award for her brilliant academic excellence. In 1996, she completed her BE in Chemical Engineering from Assam Engineering College. She topped in BE.

Lopamudra pursued her M Tech degree from University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), Mumbai in 1999 and worked in DJ Sanvi Engineering College for few months before she proceeded for Netherland to pursue her PhD.

After obtaining PhD from Eindhoven University of Technology in 2005, she joined the same University as Research Assistant. She also did her post doctoral from the University.  In 2007, she joined ‘Shell Global Solutions’ –a renowned oil company.

Lopamudra was also a Visharad in Vocal music. She was very helpful.

She was diagnosed with malignt brain tumour in April, 2013. She was initially treated in Netherland and was brought back to India for further treatment.

Lopamudra leaves behind her husband Harish Goel, daughters Tanvi and Taman and a host of relatives and well-wishers. Her untimely demise is a great loss for the scientific community. Moni, today we pray to God—May your eterl soul rest in peace.
