GUWAHATI: The Monsoon Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA) that was scheduled to start from July 18 has been deferred. Now the session will start from July 26. Such a decision has been taken because of the current wave of floods in the State.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had to discuss the matter with State Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami. After that the Chief Minister requested the Governor for the deferment of the Assembly session. Now the Governor is going to summon the session afresh.

Addressing the press here on Tuesday, Speaker Goswami said: “At this hour, the people’s representatives must stay beside flood-affected people in their respective areas. This apart, the road communications have been badly affected by the floods. The situation has prompted the Chief Minister to discuss the matter with me. The Chief Minister moved the Government with the plea for the postponement of the Session after the discussion between us.”

Meanwhile, earlier the Monsoon Session that was scheduled to be held from July 18 had six working days. “However, now the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Assembly is to decide the number of working days of the deferred session,” he said. Goswami further said that the State government is laying stress on tackling the post-flood situation infamous for numerous water-borne diseases in the State.
