NAGAON, June 10: “We do not need to learn about the term equalism from Lenin or Karl Marx, rather we can learn it better from the Vedas and the Upanishads or the Bhagawat,” said State Health and Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday in Nagaon while addressing the 5th foundation day function of Srimanta Sankardeva Vishwavidyalaya at the Khagen Mahanta auditorium.

Gracing the occasion as the chief guest, Sarma said in the Bhagawat it was clearly stated that all were part of God and it echoed greater equalism than the term of Lenin or Karl Marx. Referring to a recent criticism of his statement about Sankardeva and Hinduism, Sarma said that at present, in Assam there was lack of intellectuals for which there was need to once again introduce Sankardeva. The minister said that Sankardeva Vishwavidyalaya was not a university of the private sector but a social university. He hoped that Sankardeva Vishwavidyalaya would carry forward the legacy and creations of the great saint. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dr Kandarba Kr Deka gave the welcome speech and Chancellor Bhabendranath Deka, MLAs Rupak Sarma and Ramakanta Deori were present in the function. Dr Karabi Deka Hazarika delivered the 2nd foundation day lecture on the topic ‘Srimanta Sankardeva: Drasta aru Srasta’.
