Repair of embankment in Kalaigaon circle underway

KALAIGAON, June 8: In respond to the demand of the people, the authority concerned has begun repair of the damaged embankment of river Noa at Rupatal under Kalaigaon revenue circle. The repair work has been on since the last 15 days when Assam Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta visited Rupatal on May 24 along with his departmental Chief Executive Engineer. Mahanta inspected the damaged portion of the embankment and directed the authority concerned to start work for improvement of damaged embankment within two days. The Minister could know from the flood affected people of area that following incessant rain in August 2015, river Noa had submerged several villages like Rupatal, Bhehguri, Shagunbahi, Balipara and Geruwa and that river Noa had changed its course through the damaged embankment. Thousands of bighas of crops were destroyed and several houses were washed away. As directed, Niraj Sarma, assistant executive Engineer of Udalguri Water Resources division started repair of the embankment. Sarma has also been working on diverting the river to its original track.
