Repatriated Brus from Tripura Demand Share in Rehabilitation Package

The Brus from Tripura have demanded the same rehabilitation package, as the Ministry of Home Affairs and Mizoram Government is all set to repatriate the Brus from Tripura relief camp before September 30, 2018. A committee headed by Elvis Chorky has demanded an equal package and has threatened to boycott repatriation of the remaining Brus from Tripura unless they obtain the same package.

Elvis said that there are about 1,712 families who have already returned to Mizoram since 2010. Lately it has been seen that repatriation package has been increased to a huge extent. The spokesperson also feels that it is right to demand the same and that it is based on first come first serve basis and demand equal package. On July 20, in Mamit an Equal Right Demand Committee was formed. The committee plans to take the initiatives to demand and pressurize the government to provide the same package to the repatriated families, who are, at present, living in Kolasib, Mamit and Lunglei district of Mizoram.

Chorky also added that they wait till August 16 and if there is no proper assurance from the Government of India, they will definitely launch an agitation and boycott the remaining repatriation.

The repatriated Bru families, who have got a one-time package of Rs 80,000 per month per family and a ration free for a period of 1 year when they returned to Mizoram.

"Our lives have changed completely since returning to Mizoram. Our children go to school, some families are into farming, while some still practice jhum cultivation. We lead peaceful and normal lives. Yet, many of us live in a pathetic condition and the package would mean a lot,” said Elvis Chorky.

The repatriated Bru families have highlighted the package issue several times with the central government, with no given positive response. However, the committee is determined to get the demands met.

The Mizoram government is all set to repatriate the remaining Brus from August 14, In spite of the current withdrawal of Brus Displaced People's Forum (MBDPF) leaders from the quadripartite agreement. With regards to the settlement, the Centre would deposit Rs 4 lakh in the bank account of each repatriated Bru family, which could be withdrawn after 3 years and a housing assistance to the tune of Rs 1.5 lakh would be given to each family. Each family would be provided with a monthly allowance of Rs 5,000 for the next 2 years and free ration for the same period.
