Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu convicted of raping minor girl

Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu was convicted on 25th April 2018 by a Jodhpur court of raping a minor girl, putting an end to the hopes of all his followers who claimed that he was innocent. Following the judgement by the special court, three states have been put on alert fearing agitation by Asaram Bapu's followers.

Asaram Bapu was charged with raping a 16-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh in the year 2013. On the basis of a complaint, he was arrested in Semptember 2013 and has been spending his time in jail waiting for verdict since the past 56 months.

Asaram may now have to spend 10 years in jail or may even face life imprisonment following the verdict against him by the Jodhpur court.

IPS officer Ajay Pal Lamba, who supervised the investigation of the Asaram Bapu's rape case said, "This is a historic verdict for criminal jurisprudence. The truth has won. It shows that if the law works impartially, even persons from the weakest sections of the society can take on the most influential ones and get justice."
