Tripura High Court gets new judge

Agartala, May 16: Justice Tinlianthang Vaiphei of the Gauhati High Court was on Monday sworn-in as judge of the Tripura High Court.  A judicial official said that Justice Vaiphei, 60, likely to be the acting chief justice of Tripura High Court after the union law and justice ministry issues a formal notification this week with the concurrence of the chief justice of India. Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy administered the oath of office to Vaiphei at a simple ceremony at the Raj Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, his cabinet colleagues, leaders of various political parties and top officials. Justice Vaiphei, who started law practice in Manipur in 1980 and elevated to the Gauhati High Court as additiol judge in July 2003, replaces Deepak Kumar Gupta, who has been transferred as the chief justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court. Separate high courts were set up in 2013 in Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya which were earlier under the jurisdiction of the Gauhati High Court which was the common for all the northeastern states.
