ULFA-I Chief Paresh Baruah Warns Assam Police Not To Assault Protesting Students

Commander-in- Chief of United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) chief Paresh Baruah forewarned the Assam Police to refrain from assaulting the students protesting over the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which is being tabled in the Rajya Sabha today.

The ULFA Chief said that he will not sit idle if protesting students or any Assamese for that matter are assaulted in any way. He urged Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, Director General of Police not to lathi charge on the people taking to the streets and protesting vehemently opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

It may be mentioned here that the protesting students of Handique Girls’ College and Cotton College were lathi-charged by police personnel on duty on their way to Dispur. The agitating students were stopped with barricades placed in the city’s ABC area. When students tried to break the barricades they were brutally assaulted and tear gas shells were lobbed. Several students sustained grievous injuries during the clash with police.

The army was called out in Dibrugarh to assist the district administration to avert any untoward incident in the wake of raging protests. Exams were postponed in different colleges and universities as students take part in anti-CAB protests.

The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on late Monday night with 311 votes in favour of the Bill. The Bill which has triggered massive outrage in Northeast India has to be passed by both the Houses of the Parliament to become a law.
