Union Minister iugurates regiol agri fair

Shillong, Jan 6: A four-day Regiol Agriculture Fair (RAF) with the theme “Drive to doubling income of Tribal Farmers in the North East India” was iugurated by Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Radha Mohan Singh at Umiam on Saturday. 
Addressing the gathering, Singh said the government has initiated various flagship programmes for the welfare of people living in rural areas, especially the farming communities, focusing mainly to double the farmers’ income from agriculture and allied sectors.  The Union Minister also appreciated ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam for leading basic, strategic and applied research specific to the farming problems of the region. He lauded the efforts of the ICAR in launching the programme to double income of farmers on a pilot project basis in the villages adopted by it in the next five years.
He said 90% assistance is given to the North-eastern States and Meghalaya should accelerate the implementation of these schemes.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr rendra Prakash, Director ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, highlighted various achievements of the institute in the last decade.
ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi is the primary centre of agricultural research in the Northeast. The institute is involved in research and extension support in all the disciplines of agriculture, horticulture, animal science, agro-forestry and fisheries through institute-level programmes and various exterlly-aided projects to cater the need of the hill farming community for improvement of their livelihood security. Dr YR Mee, Additiol Commissioner (Extension), Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers’ Welfare, said farmer-centric activities are organised actively and successfully under the aegis of the present government for the betterment of the farmers. The scope to directly communicate with the farmers was the highlight of the event, she added. Meanwhile, the regiol agricultural fair witnessed signing of three memoranda of understanding facilitated by the Zol Technology Magement Unit (ZTMU) of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region.  A souvenir of the fair and CD on successful technological intervention for doubling farmers’ income in the region were also launched on the occasion by Singh.
The RAF will give special focus on finding ways and solutions to sustain income security from prevalent traditiol form of agriculture and also initiate move to double farmers’ income in the region. The event is expected to help create an opportunity for various stakeholders at regiol level to exchange ideas, knowledge and experiences for effective transfer of technology. It will witness brainstorming sessions on doubling farmers’ income.
