Woman strangled to death by Husband for nonpayment of Dowry in South Salmara, Assam

Mankachar: In a shocking incident, a married woman was allegedly killed by her notorious husband for nonpayment of dowry.

As per reports, six months back, accused husband identified as Abdul Sabur of Jhaudanga village in South Salmara got married to the love of his life Phul Begum, however, then things took an ugly turn after the husband started to harass his wife both physically and mentally for nonpayment of dowry amounting Rs. 50,000.

Sources also informed that on August 15, 2019, the accused husband allegedly strangled his wife to death. Later, she was taken to hospital by her husband but was declared brought dead by the doctors.

Following the medical report, the notorious husband flees from the spot.

Meanwhile, the father of the deceased woman had lodged a case at Mankachar Police Station Case No 503/19 under section 304(B)/34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Speaking to the media, the father of the deceased alleged that his daughter was mentally harassed by her notorious husband soon after their marriage. “He tortured her physically as we failed to pay him Rs 50,000 as dowry,” said the poor father.

It is to be noted that a dowry is a transfer of parental property, gifts, or money at the marriage of a daughter. Dowry contrasts with the related concepts of bride price and dower. While bride price or bride service is a payment by the groom or his family to the bride's parents, dowry is the wealth transferred from the bride's family to the groom or his family, ostensibly for the bride.

Similarly, dower is the property settled on the bride herself, by the groom at the time of marriage, and which remains under her ownership and control. Dowry is an ancient custom, and its existence may well predate records of it. Dowries continue to be expected and demanded as a condition to accept a marriage proposal in some parts of the world, mainly in parts of Asia, Northern Africa and the Balkans. In some parts of the world, disputes related to dowry sometimes result in acts of violence against women, including killings and acid attacks. The custom of dowry is most common in cultures that are strongly patrilineal and that expect women to reside with or near their husband's family (patrilocality). Dowries have long histories in Europe, South Asia, Africa and other parts of the world.
