Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights

Nalbari, May 30: A one day workshop on Intellectual Property Rights Awareness was organised by the Cell for IPR, Nalbari College in association with Patent Information Centre, ASTEC (Assam Science Technology and Environment Council) in the college premises on Tuesday. Dr. Ranjit Kr. Barman, senior scientist and Head i/c of Science and Technology Department, ASTEC and Siddhartha Devnath, Scientist C and Head, Patent Information Centre, joined the workshop as resource persons.

Principal of Nalbari College Dr Dipak Goswami delivered the welcome address in which he stressed the increasing need of IPR awareness in all levels of society to combat the evils of piracy and duplicity. Addressing the first session of the workshop, Dr. Ranjit Kr. Barman said that Nalbari College is the first college in Assam with an IPR Cell. He broadly dwelt upon various aspects associated with IPR and lamented the fact that the people of Assam are not aware of the IPR Act though it had been passed many decades ago in 1970.

He also pledged to co-operate in all the future activities of the cell and called upon the participants to work sincerely towards awareness and promotion of intellectual property rights. Addressing the second session, scientist Siddhartha Devnath said that it is very essential that each uniquely innovative work is protected by IPR so that nobody can make any unlawful profit out of it. Devnath informed the participants that the process of marking the Assamese gamosa with GI is on and this will prevent the production of gamosa outside Assam. He also mentioned that muga has already been marked with GI and we should all buy the muga with that mark (55-3840) only. Academician Dr. Krishna Chandra Goudo also attended the workshop, a press release stated.
