World Environment Day celebrated across State

Golaghat, June 6: World Environment Day was observed by Golaghat district administration by carrying out a plantation programme at the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday. Deputy Commissioner Gaurav Bothra, Additional Deputy Commissioners Orpah Baglary, Utpal Doley and Dhiraj Das, Circle Officer, Golaghat, Lakhimi Dutta, Jila Sainik Welfare Officer, Col. B Saikia, along with heads of various departments and officials and staff of the Deputy Commissioner’s office took part in the programme. Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner stressed adverse impact of plastic waste on the environment and asked all present to pledge to reduce the use of plastic and reuse and recycle to the extent possible. In a separate programme, Deputy Commissioner Gaurav Bothra along with SDO(c) Dhansiri, Bipul Das carried out a plantation drive at Gandhkoroi village in Sarupathar. The Deputy Commissioner was on an inspection and took stock of the progress of construction works at the residence of Shahid Kushal Konwar and planted saplings on both sides of the approach road to the residence. Similar plantation programmes were also carried out in all sub-divisions, departmental offices, circle offices and awareness meetings on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ were also held.

SIVASAGAR: World Environment Day was observed in Sivasagar on Tuesday by the Sivasagar district administration. A large plantation drive was conducted on the occasion. Saplings were planted at the office campus of the Deputy Commissioner here by Pallav Gopal Jha, Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar. Saplings were also planted at various places of Sivasagar district by other government departments and NGOs.

RANGIA: World Environment Day was observed at various places, govt offices, schools, colleges and other establishments including Railway DRM office, Municipal Board, SSB, Rangia College, SDO civil office, Circle Office alongwith rest of the world on Tuesday. The day was also celebrated at Rangia Railway Division under the leadership of Ravilesh Kumar DRM Rangia division at Multi Disciplinary Training Centre Rangia.

JORHAT: World Environment Day was observed with various programmes throughout Jorhat district. In schools, awareness was created among the young minds about plastic pollution and how to deal with it. Students were distributed and gifted saplings during the programmes which they were asked to plant in their houses, said Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Jorhat MP, during a programme at Kuwari Pukhuri High School, Jorhat on Tuesday.

In Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Baghchung, a day-long programme on World Environment Day was held. As part of the programme, a poster competition on the topic ‘Beat the Plastic’ and collection of signatures for students, teachers and officials from Vodafone, said Fr Blasus Tete, the Vice-Principal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Baghchung, on Tuesday.

World Environment Day was observed at Army Public School, Jorhat with the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ and the day-long programme was inaugurated by Yasmin Kaur Bains, the Principal of APS, Jorhat, who called upon the students to save planet earth and to shun use of plastic.

MANGALDAI: World Environment Day was celebrated in Mangaldai, the headquarter town of Darrang district, in different ways at the government and non-government level. In this connection, Crystal Vision, a leading local non-government organization, with support from district administration, Mangaldai Sports Association and the Forest department observed the day at the Mangaldai Stadium campus with plantation, cleanliness drive, distribution of saplings among children, felicitation to meritorious students and awareness meeting.

Participating in the programme, Professor of Economics at Sam Houston State University, USA, Dr Hiranya Kr Nath and Chief Scientist of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Darrang, under Assam Agriculture University, Dr. Pabitra Kr Bordoloi spoke on the importance of plantation, preserving the surrounding environment for future with special emphasis on this year’s theme for the Environment Day ‘Beat the Plastic Pollution’. They urged upon the younger generation to gradually reduce the use of non-bio degradable plastic items in their day-to-day life by reusing of such materials, including carry bags, keeping in mind the threat of plastic in future.

Earlier, the organizers offered felicitation to Pallabi Das, the 10th position holder in HS final examination in Commerce who inaugurated the programme by planting a sapling of Bokul in the campus.

Gohpur: Hotel Radisson Blu, Guwahati in collaboration with the NGO We For You and Green Bud Society celebrated World Environment Day at Pilinkata High School along the Assam-Meghalaya border. An awareness rally was taken out for promoting the theme ‘Beat plastic pollution’. A short play was also performed by the school students based on environmental awareness. This was followed by drawing competition among the students.

On the other hand, Amar Banani, in association with Kalakhetra Samaj, Kalaguru Foundation and Abhinaya, observed Gos Bihu in the premises of Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra on Tuesday. Forest Man of India, Jadav Payeng participated as the chief guest.

Dibrugarh: Along with various parts of the world, World Environment Day was observed here as well. With a special focus on afforestation, various conscious groups were seen planting saplings at different places. As part of the campaign undertaken by the district administration to plant 10 lakh saplings in association with Oil India Limited, Forest Department, NGOs, student unions and conscious citizens, saplings were planted aplenty throughout the district.

Participating in a plantation drive at Dhekeri Gaon, Banipur with the support of the locals, Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri urged the people there to take care of the newly-planted saplings. Besides that, Madduri also inaugurated a tree plantation campaign at the Shri Shankardev Primary School. Moreover, in the World Environment Day celebrations at BCPL, MLA Rituparna Baruah and Madduri graced the occasion and planted saplings at the premises of the organization. As part of the celebrations, various environmental awareness programmes were conducted by BCPL in nearby schools like Tinisukia Sessakuch ME School and No. 23 Tinisukia LP School on June 4.

Similar awareness programmes were also held among the employees of BCPL as well as their family members. In all, a total of 2.9 lakh saplings were planted across all the revenue circles of the district put together under the supervision of the respective circle officers. Also, in the tea garden areas, around 1.5 lakh saplings were planted with the support of garden officials and small tea growers.
