Guwahati: Assam has reported a fresh rise in Covid-19 cases over the past two months, with around 80 to 90 infections detected in Upper Assam during July and August. However, health experts have said the cases reported so far have not been severe.

Health officials said the increase in infections has been observed since the end of June 2026. The Covid-19 variant currently circulating in India belongs to the RF.5 subvariant of Omicron, which emerged from the JN.1 lineage.

According to health experts, patients infected with the variant are mainly experiencing flu-like or influenza-like symptoms, with no evidence so far indicating that RF.5 is causing severe illness.

A microbiologist said the symptoms observed among patients have generally remained mild, while officials noted that sequencing of the variant detected in Assam has not yet been carried out.

Besides Covid-19, Influenza A and Influenza B viruses are also currently circulating in the state, according to health officials.

Assam had also reported Covid-19 cases in 2025, with the last cases recorded in December. Officials said Covid-19 has now become a recurring viral illness, with new variants potentially leading to periodic waves of infection.

Experts have advised people not to panic, noting that the recent increase in Assam has largely been limited to localised clusters. They also pointed out that a significant section of the Indian population has developed hybrid immunity through previous infections and vaccination.

However, senior citizens, pregnant women and people with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease remain more vulnerable to complications and have been advised to exercise greater caution.

Health experts have stressed the need for monitoring the situation while maintaining appropriate precautions as the state continues to track the latest infections.
