Dibrugarh: Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, has started treatment for 15 patients suffering from rare diseases after being designated as a Centre of Excellence in Rare Diseases, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.

Sharing the development on social media, Sarma said the facility would enable patients from Assam and other parts of the Northeast to access specialised treatment within the state.

The Chief Minister said the treatment would be provided with full financial assistance from the Central Government, which is particularly significant for rare diseases that often require prolonged and specialised treatment.

Sarma said the initiative marks an important development in Assam’s healthcare sector and would help patients avoid travelling outside the region for specialised care.

He further said a dedicated Genetic Testing Laboratory would be established at the centre in the next phase. The facility is expected to help in the early detection of rare diseases and ensure timely treatment.

The Chief Minister said the initiative could provide a new lease of life to patients suffering from such conditions and strengthen Assam’s capacity to provide advanced healthcare services.

Sarma also expressed his wishes for the speedy recovery of all patients undergoing treatment.
