GUWAHATI: GP Singh, Additional Director General of Police, Law, and Order, applauded the traffic personnel who fined a BJP MLA from Duliajan for Terash Gowalla violating traffic rules in Guwahati.
Singh took to micro-blogging site Twitter and wrote, "Complimented the traffic staff of Chandmari PS for an exemplary display of duty under trying circumstances. God bless."
Singh also shared a photograph of two traffic staff from Chandmari Police Station who were on duty on February 25, 2020 when the incident occurred.
Duliajan MLA Terash Gowalla was fined for parking his vehicle in a ‘No Parking’ zone in Guwahati on February 25th, 2020. There were reports that Gowalla also misbehaved and assaulted the on-duty police constable, Bishnu Bora for locking the wheel of his vehicle
According to reports, Gowalla had come to visit the Chief Engineer’s office of PWD in the afternoon at Chandmari and parked his vehicle at a 'No Parking Zone'.
Meanwhile, Bishnu Bora, a traffic police constable of Chandmari police station clamped the wheel of the vehicle and issued a challan.
Later, Bora, who didn’t move to any “threats and high handedness”, told reporters, “I locked the vehicle for parking it in a ‘No Parking’ zone. I was doing my duty.”
Even the social media users highly appreciated the traffic cops for providing the “rules are same for all.”
Netizens also appreciated Singh for recognizing the effort of the traffic personnel, which they said will further boost the morale of the force.
Guwahati Traffic Police (GTP) collected over Rs 4.60-crore on the spot fines for traffic violations in 2019, apart from fines collected for non-FIR cases that are paid at the court. The charging of fines for traffic violations has been on the rise in Assam.
The year 2019 witnessed as many as 240 fatal cases involving the killing of 249 people. There were as many as 691 non-fatal accidents during the year, leading to the injury of 836 people.
