GUWAHATI: Assam's Devajit Saikia is all set to take up the office formally as the newly elected secretary to the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Sunday at Mumbai during the Special General Meeting(SGM).
Saikia's tenure begins after being nominated by board officials following promotion of Board Secretary Jay Shah as a full-time chairman of ICC in August 2024. Shah assumed that position on December 1, 2024.
Prabhtej Singh Bhatia is also likely to be ratified as BCCI treasurer, succeeding Ashish Shelar. Shelar resigned soon after accepting an administrative position in the Maharashtra government.
Saikia and Bhatia are the only two individuals nominated for their respective posts since BCCI electoral officer Achal Kumar Joti, the former Chief Election Commissioner, finalized the list of candidates on Tuesday.
Saikia has been serving as the interim BCCI secretary since Jay Shah's appointment as ICC chairman, while Bhatia’s nomination for treasurer comes after Shelar’s departure. As per the BCCI constitution, vacant posts must be filled within 45 days, with Sunday’s SGM falling on the 43rd day.
In a separate development, ICC chairman Jay Shah will be honored during the SGM. Shah has been invited to attend, but he will not be taking part in the discussions. Following Greg Barclay, he became the youngest chairman of the ICC, making history.
