Crime in the Capital Sparks Safety Concerns Among Public Figures
In a brazen early morning incident, Congress MP Sudha Ramakrishnan was the victim of a chain-snatching while on a walk near the Polish Embassy in Delhi’s high-security Chanakyapuri area. The Member of Parliament from Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, filed a police complaint and has also written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding urgent action.

The incident occurred around 6:15 am on Monday, when Ms Ramakrishnan was walking with fellow MP Rajathi of the DMK. According to her statement, a man wearing a full-face helmet approached them on a scooter from the opposite direction and suddenly snatched her gold chain.

“Since he was moving slowly, I didn’t suspect anything. But he yanked the chain from my neck with such force that I suffered injuries and my churidar got torn,” she said, adding that both lawmakers shouted for help.

They later flagged down a Delhi Police mobile patrol vehicle and reported the incident. Ms Ramakrishnan noted the symbolic and actual severity of the crime, saying, “If a woman MP is not safe in a diplomatic zone in the national capital, where else can we feel secure?”

She has written a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah

In her letter to Amit Shah, she described the event as a “blatant attack” in one of Delhi’s most protected areas. She urged authorities to identify and arrest the perpetrator quickly, recover her stolen chain—worth over four sovereigns—and restore a sense of safety for all women in public spaces.

No official statement has been issued by the Delhi Police yet.
