Shillong: The Meghalaya Government’s proposal to introduce Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state might not be approved by the Centre, claims a report.

Notably, the Meghalaya Assembly on December 19 passed a resolution to urge the Centre to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.

As per the resolution, the ILP should be implemented in Meghalaya under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations, 1873 to safeguard the interests of the citizens of the state.

Meanwhile, highly-placed sources in New Delhi on Saturday informed that the Ministry of Home Affairs has no immediate plans to introduce ILP in the state. Moreover, a notification in this regard was also issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Reports also says that as per the MHA officials they are of the opinion that since entire Meghalaya was never covered by the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations, 1873 even during the British era, the question of the introduction of ILP in the state does not arise at present.

Meanwhile, the Dy CM of Meghalaya Prestone Tynsong termed the media reports over ILP in Meghalaya is mere speculation and said that there is no official confirmation from the concern authorities on the matter.

He also appealed to the people not to fall prey to such reports which only lead to disturbance in the state.
