Guwahati: An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale has hit Kokrajar in Assam at around 10.20 AM Wednesday. Areas of the Northeast, West Bengal and Bangladesh felt light tremors. Locals in Guwahati said the tremors lasted for about 10 seconds. Tremors were also felt in parts of Bangladesh and in Bihar. There were no immediate reports of any damages at this point of time.

The entire northeastern region is prone to earthquake. Here are some safety tips that might come handy during an emergency situation.

IF YOU ARE INDOORS DURING AN EARTHQUAKE

First of all, during a disaster situation, the golden rule number 1 is to calm yourself down and take charge of the situation.

IF YOU ARE TRAPPED UNDER DEBRIS

Ensure you do the following if you are trapped under debris during or after an earthquake:

  • Do not light a match.
  • Do not move around or kick up dust.
  • Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.
  • Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you.
  • Use a whistle if one is available.
  • Shout only as a last resort.
  • Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.
