Himanta Biswa Sarma Reviews Flood Damage in Darrang, Orders Stronger Embankments

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday visited flood-hit parts of Darrang district after breaches in embankments along the Noa River and in Sipajhar worsened flooding in several areas.

At Outala village in Mangaldoi, Sarma inspected the section of the Noa River embankment that gave way and led to widespread inundation. He later travelled to Kapili Satra village in Sipajhar to assess another damaged stretch.

The Chief Minister interacted with officials during the field visit and took stock of the damage caused by the breaches. Discussions focused on restoring the damaged sections as well as developing stronger flood-control structures capable of withstanding future pressure from rising water levels.

Sarma said the government would extend financial assistance to families affected by the flooding in accordance with existing norms. He also directed the concerned departments to prioritise restoration work in the affected locations.

"The embankment breach has caused significant hardship to the people. I have come here to personally assess the situation and review the damage," Sarma said.

Officials of the Water Resources Department briefed the Chief Minister on the repair work and other measures being undertaken to contain the situation. Sarma stressed that temporary repairs alone would not be sufficient and called for durable solutions in areas vulnerable to repeated breaches.

Ministers Ashok Singhal and Nilima Devi, Sipajhar MLA Paramananda Rajbongshi, senior government officials and local representatives were present during the inspection. They also reviewed relief operations and restoration measures being implemented in the affected areas.

The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure timely assistance for affected households and to strengthen flood protection infrastructure as part of a long-term strategy to reduce the impact of recurring floods in Darrang.
