Guwahati: Today, the Army and Rapid Action Force (RAF) conducted a flag march across Shillong , as security was tightened in the Meghalaya capital following violence during a Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) rally on 19th August.

The move came amid heightened tensions after vehicles carrying tourists from Assam were allegedly attacked during a KSU black-flag protest. Several vehicles were vandalised and some tourists were reportedly injured, while public property was also damaged.

The Centre has approved the deployment of  six companies of central armed forces in Meghalaya to assist the state police in maintaining law and order.

Meanwhile, Assam Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora and Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar held a high-level meeting with senior officials in Guwahati to review the situation and discuss measures to prevent further escalation.

The violence in Shillong triggered protests by motor vehicle workers’ unions at Jorabat, where demonstrators have been demanding compensation for damaged vehicles and an apology. Three senior KSU office-bearers were arrested in connection with the Shillong violence.

Government in both states have appealed for peace and are focusing on preventing further incidents and ensuring the smooth movement of people and vehicles between Assam and Meghalaya.
