NRC Assam: Supreme Court directs State Coordinator to submit District-Wise Reports

Guwahati: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the state Co-ordinator of NRC Assam Prateek Hajela to submit a report containing a district-wise percentage of people who have been excluded from the final draft of NRC Assam.

The Final Draft of the NRC was published on July 31 this year.

The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked Hajela to submit the report.

The Supreme Court bench comprising justices Ranjan Gogoi, Navin Sinha and K M Joseph sought the response of all the stakeholders including All Assam Students Union, All Assam Minority Students Union on the Centre's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on the issue of NRC Assam.

The Apex Court furt5her stated that the claim and objection form will be made available to the public from August 30 and the same will be accepted from August 30.

Post-publication of the final list of NRC Assam, the people whose names will be included will be given usual Aadhaar number as applicable to legal residents in the country.

The Supreme Court had earlier stated that there will be no punitive action by the authorities against the 40 lakh people whose names have not been included in the final draft of NRC Assam.

Assam which is reeling under the influx of illegal infiltrators is the only Indian state to have an NRC, which was first prepared in 1951.
