NRC Update: Opposition Vent Anger Over Publication of Assam NRC Final Draft During Lok Sabha Session

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha witnessed a heated debate on Monday, following the publication of Final Draft NRC in Assam, where more than 40 lakh applicants could not make it to the Complete Draft.

Leader of opposition Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge today stated during the Lok Sabha session that "original citizens" of the state are being harassed and agitated by asking questions and this is instrumental in creating division in the state based on caste and creed.

Even the left front lambasted the move of BJP led Assam Government as Communist Party of India (Markist) (CPIM) leader Mohammad Saleem reiterated that the situation in Assam is volatile as the basic "human rights and democratic rights" of the people living in Assam are at the ante.

Meanwhile, amid this war of words, Samajwadi Party Leader Jaiprakash Narayan Yadav commented that the NRC move of the Government would catapult the situation towards a deep-rooted "hatred" and "violence" in Assam. He further termed the NRC Final Draft Publication move as a "war on people" who are living in the state since past 4 decades.

It may be mentioned that the initial draft NRC which contains a list of state's citizens, for Assam was earlier published in December end in 2017 as per the Supreme court's order. The first NRC Draft carried the names of only 1.9 crore people residing in Assam out of the total 3.29 crore applicants.

The final draft of the NRC has been published today amidst widespread anxiety and tight security arrangements across the state and the capital city Guwahati. Out of the 3.29 crore applicants, the NRC Final Draft left out 40,07,707 people, but they will not be labeled as foreigners and no punitive action will be taken against them.

Meanwhile, the MHA and NRC authorities said that they will be given a fair chance of inclusion in the Final NRC to be published in December 2018. From August 7, these people can visit their local NRC Seva Kendras and Local Registrar to know the reason behind their exclusion.
