Renowned Actress Seema Biswas from Assam donates Rs 5 lakh for Assam Flood Relief

Guwahati: After Akshay Kumar and other regional stars and players from the state, renowned Actress Seema Biswas also came forward to donate funds for Assam Flood Relief.

It is to be noted that several celebrities both from the region and Bollywood including cricket stars, earlier came forward and appealed before the masses for donations.

Seema Biswas had donated an amount of Rs. 5 lakhs to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) to help the floods victims of the state.

It may also be mentioned that sprinter Hima Das, filmmaker Rima Das, cricketer Riyan Parag, actor Jatin Bora among others from Assam had donated for the relief of flood victims in the state.

Reports also claim that around 48.87 lakh people from almost 27 of the 33 districts have been affected due to the floods this year, thus, taking the death toll to 47.

About Seema Biswas

Seema Biswas (born 1965) is an Indian film and theatre actress from Assam. She shot into prominence with the role of Phoolan Devi in Shekhar Kapur's film Bandit Queen (1994), for which she won the National Film Award for Best Actress. She has a reputation for performing strong character roles. She won the 2000 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the 2006 Best Actress Genie Award for her role as Shakuntala in Deepa Mehta's Water (2005). Her other mainstream films include Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), for which she won the Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress, Bhoot (2003), Vivah (2006), and Half Girlfriend (2017). In addition to films, Biswas has been a part of many television shows.

Actress Biswas was born in Nalbari, Assam to Jagdish Biswas and Meera Biswas. Her mother, an early influence, was a history teacher and a pioneering figure for female theatre artistes in Assam; and she came into contact with artists like Bhupen Hazarika, Phani Sarma and Bishnuprasad Rabha early in life. She studied Political Science at Nalbari College, and later joined the National School of Drama, New Delhi. After graduating from NSD in 1984, she joined the NSD Repertory Company.
