Guwahati: Following the sensational allegations of rape and molestation of two sisters on the pretext of offering jobs, demands for the urgent resignation of Railway Minister for State Rajen Gohain has intensified throughout the state.

On Monday, both the Opposition parties- Congress and AIUDF have demanded immediate ouster of rape accused Union Minister of State of Railways Rajen Gohain.

The demands for resignation came after a case was registered against the minister in Nagaon Sadar police station on charges of allegedly raping and sexually harassing a 26-year-old married woman along with her sister in Nagaon district.

Speaking to the media today, General Secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Apurba Bhattacharya said that the ouster of Gohain is very important to ensure that a free and fair investigation can be conducted because he might use his influence to disrupt the legal procedure.

Congress spokesperson Bhattacharya said, “BJP has always been claiming to be a party with high moral values. If the BJP really believes in morality, then Prime Minister Narendra Modi must make sure that the tainted minister must be removed from his portfolio. A case has been filed and the law clearly states that in this type of cases, the investigation has to be completed even if the complainant seeks to withdraw the case for some reason.”

Bhattacharya also urged the police to probe into this heinous matter impartially and keep itself away from any political pressure or influence.

On the other hand, opposition AIUDF has also echoed on the same notes as Congress demanding an urgent resignation and a transparent investigation into the case.

AIUDF Spokesperson Champak Kalita told the media, “What are the circumstances which led the complainant to seek to withdraw the case? What exactly transpired? Things look very suspicious. Let Rajen Gohain come out in open and deny any involvement in the entire episode.”

Kalita further mentioned that Nagaon Police should suo moto file a case against Gohain on accounts of Human Trafficking Act after the contents of the audio clip has surfaced which clearly indicates to the immoral activities of Minister Rajen Gohain.

Meanwhile, a leader of the BJP on the condition of anonymity was quoted in a local English daily saying, “The Law is the most important thing. It will take its own course and everything would be crystal clear. Has anything been proven? Anyone can make allegations. Tomorrow even I can put up allegations against any leader of Opposition. However, an allegation by itself is not a proof of guilt. Let there be an impartial and proper inquiry and everything will come out clear.”
