In a major setback for the Congress and its government in Madhya Pradesh, Scindia, a former close confident of the Gandhi family and deputy of Chief Minister Kamal Nath, on Tuesday had resigned the grand old party. They are now all set to join the BJP soon. This development has come after the senior Congress leader openly criticised the party national leadership for its debacle in recently concluded Delhi assembly elections.

Minutes after Jyotiraditya Scindia announced his resignation from the Congress, the grand old party insisted he is being expelled instead. KC Venugopal, general secretary of the Congress, issued a short statement that read,

“Congress president has approved the expulsion of Jyotiraditya Scindia from the Indian National Congress with immediate effect for anti-party activities.” However, this statement comes after Scindia tweeting out his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi dated March 9.

BJP took a sharp dig at the ‘expulsion’ logic by the Congress. BJP’s Amit Malviya asked, “How can you expel a person who has already resigned?”

Earlier, in his resignation to Sonia Gandhi, Scindia cited, “…as you well know, this is a path that has been drawing itself out over the last year,” adding that he is “unable” to “serve” people have been a part of the Congress.

Terming the 2020 Delhi Assembly poll results “disappointing”, then Congress general secretary Scindia had said that the party needs to reinvent itself with a new ideology, new thinking and new ways of functioning. He had said,“The results of the Delhi are very disappointing for the party… And new thinking, new ideology and new ways of functioning are required.”
