Chirang: In a tragic incident, a truck fell off a bridge in Pagla River in Chirang after losing its control on Saturday evening.

As per eyewitnesses in the region, the incident took place in Dadripara under Bijni Police Station in Chirang district.

As per a video footage, the truck was over-loaded with bricks.

Reportedly, the driver lost control over the truck bearing registration number AS 01CC 6719 and fell off the 50-metre long bridge.

While speaking to The Sentinel, the eyewitnesses said that the driver had sustained severe injuries and also fractured his bone. He was reportedly shifted to a nearby hospital.

It may also be mentioned that three more people including a handyman also received severe injuries on their bodies and were reported serious.

Locals also claimed that the dilapidated condition of the wooden bridge has remained a nightmare for the people of Chirang as this is the only route from Chariali to Ballamguri area and the adjacent way to Manas National Park.

“We have been constantly complaining the matter to the BTC authority about the condition of the bridge over the years, however, no strict measures were initiative till date resulting to this incident,” said a local resident.

Few others stated dissatisfaction over the fact that the overloaded trucks carrying brick, sand, stone chips and other heavy motor vehicles have left no option, but to move via this route to Chariali from Ballamguri area.

“Potholes and cracks are said to be the main reason behind the frequent accidents on the bridge, which lies in a dilapidated state. Nearly 2,000 mineral-laden trucks pass over the 50-year-old bridge every day,” said another local resident.
