GUWAHATI: November 11, is celebrated as Bima Lokpal Day by the Council for Insurance Ombudsman at all ombudsman offices of the country. The Guwahati office also engaged in celebrating the auspicious day through a series of programmes. This was set in motion by the newly joined Insurance Ombudsman for North East region who inaugurated the day long activities by lighting of the lamp. This was followed by meeting with Heads of Insurance Offices in Guwahati and thereafter separately with Insurance intermediaries, eminent persons and cross-section of the Insuring public. Stress was laid on speedy and fair settlement of customer grievances and mostly through conciliation mechanism.

The Institution of Insurance Ombudsman (Bima Lokpal) has been brought to existence through Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017 promulgated by Ministry of Finance, Government of India and subsequently Amended in 2021.

Despite the existence of elaborate and effective in-house grievance redressal machinery with all Insurance Companies, a need for creating another Quasi-Judicial Forum was being felt over a long period of time. The objective of the institution of Ombudsman is to provide resolution to the problems faced by the insuring public in a cost effective, efficient and impartial manner, stated a press release.
