GUWAHATI: To bridge down the gap between the farmers with the market and consumers, the Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART), amid pandemic and lockdown of the entire country, came forward to create a market linkage for the farmers to sell their Agri-Horti produce.

A total of 196.38 MT of different Agri- Horti produce (Pumpkin - 74 MT, Potato- 33 MT, Water Melon - 38.50 MT, Maize – 29 MT and Pineapple – 21.88 MT) was sold to traders from different parts of Assam and neighbouring West Bengal. The commodities were sourced from individual farmers, Farmer Interest Groups (FIGs), Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), APART cluster demonstration plots, and Cluster farmers. The consignments were directly picked up from the farm gate by the traders, thus avoiding the involvement of any middleman. This initiative has helped the farmers to sell the produces with maximum benefits.

APART, a World-Bank financed, Govt of Assam project is working towards strengthening the agriculture and allied ecosystem of the State, by guiding the farmers on updated technology, creating better market linkages, etc. The project is also initiating the formation of Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) to empower the farmers towards sustainable farming and post-harvest solutions, stated a press release.
