NRL celebrates World Environment Day

Guwahati, June 7: Internationally acclaimed Environmentalist and Green Oscar Award Winner for Greater Adjutant Stork (Hargila) conservation, Dr. Purnima Devi Barman, graced the World Environment Day events organized by NRL on June 5.

She had a rich interaction with around 150 students of nearby schools and women folk of the neighbourhood on bio-diversity and pollution through plastic and shared her conservation story for Hargila or Greater Adjutant Stork that had won her the Green Oscar award.

In another session, Dr. Barman addressed the employees and ladies’ fraternity of the NRL Township and shared journey for conservation of the environment while stressing the bane of plastic usage in our day-to-day activities. A guardian for this highly endangered bird, Dr. Barman has campaigned relentlessly for the conservation of this rare species, rescued and rehabilitated baby birds, influenced public opinion and boosted the chances of their survival. She credits her success to involving the local community specially the women folk in this crusade for saving the Hargila.

World Environment Day(WED), 2018 in NRL was celebrated in a befitting with fortnight-long activities focussing on the theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. This year’s event assumes greater significance with India being the global host country, thus bringing focus towards the environmental challenges it faces.

In a run up to the WED Day, a host of unique and informative programmes were conducted by NRL involving employees and the community in the neighbourhood, which included Art Competition amongst school students, tree plantation drive, sapling distribution and environmental film show in a nearby village along with staging street plays in 3 nearby market places and an online quiz amongst NRL employees.

Also, on June 6, Padmashree Jadav Payeng took part in NRL’s World Environment Day drive by inaugurating the Chandan plantation initiative at NRL Township’s Butterfly Valley. Under this initiative, plantation of 500 Chandan saplings has been planned during the year, while 500 Agaru plants were already planted last year. This was stated in a press release.
