A Great Move Forward Towards Cachar Dairy Development

Silchar: A great move forward was initiated with the formation of district cooperative milk producers’ union at the instance of dairy cooperative societies of Cachar district with support of office of the assistant dairy officer who is also the implementation officer of dairy development department of the State. The day long session on Tuesday for the purpose held at the premises of animal husbandry and veterinary department at Ghungoor near SMCH began with awareness focus on mechanism and benefits of a milk producers’ cooperative union and other components related to socio-economic improvement of milk farmers.

It was then followed by detailed discussion on structures, benefits and formation of a district milk union. After the formation, the district cooperative milk producers’ union will become eligible for getting benefits up to Rs 15 crore under nation programme for dairy development. Elaborating, Niranjan Bhuyan, assistant dairy development officer, said district dairy department in collaboration with veterinary department is taking various steps providing economic benefits to the milk farmers.

This includes capacity building with training and sensitisation, enhancement of productivity by cattle induction through bankable schemes. These cover, as Niranjan Bhuyan said, dairy entrepreneur development impetus, input support, creating a system for availability of feeds and fodder at reasonable price. It also includes infrastructure for clean milk production, testing collection, storing milk and supply for milk produces.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Hiramoni Sen, joint director of animal husbandry and veterinary department, Dr Horendra Bordolai, district animal husbandry and veterinary officer. They spoke of various schemes of the veterinary department through which farmers can derive benefit. Arunjyoti Dey, lead bank manager, insisted on selecting few progressive famers in each block for bankable schemes for cattle induction. H Buragohain, deputy director, dairy development, Silchar zone, pointed out only a strong cooperative society can build a strong milk union.

DC Laya Madduri who attended the programme as chief-guest, called upon the milk farmers to take advantage of the schemes floated by the government and made it clear only their better understanding and coordinated efforts with the departments concerned could bring about better results. The officers on their part, she said, should have a very positive and cooperative attitude to help the farmers in the best possible way.
