Silchar, July 19: All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA), established in 1983, has stated that it would stand by those people whose names gets deleted from the final draft list of NRC which is going to be made publicized on July 30. Addressing mediapersons at a press-meet held at Circuit House, Silchar, Rupam Nandi Purkayastha, advisor to ACKHSA said, “The state government is, no doubt, running and functioning on the sweet will and whimsical fancies of AASU. A parallel government has been set up here. As on now, ACKHSA will keep mum and wait patiently till July 30.”
“It is being apprehended that names of a large number of Bengali people will be left out from the list. ACKHSA will always stand by those individuals. Supreme Court is certainly not directing the NRC officials and personnel to prepare and publish a list of ‘D’ voters on a white blank paper. We demand fairness, transparency and accountability in the update process of NRC. True and genuine citizens are being harassed in the name of NRC. Assam government has failed in many ways. People are passing days in fear. Efforts were made to stop Dr Tapodhir Bhattacharjee’s mighty pen,” Rupam Nandi Purkayastha added. The advisor further said that the detention and languishing of Subodh Biswas are but a shameful act on the part of the government. Nothing positive has been done in this regard. The State government is dancing on someone else’s tune. None can deny the existence of a parallel government in Assam. AASU dictates terms to the government. The State government has no right to provide citizenship. The Constitution of India empowers the Centre for that, pointed Rupam Nandi Purkayastha. “Not common people but political leaders of the then times are responsible for the partition of the country,” he added.
