Hailakandi beefed up security at inter-district and inter-State checkposts

HAILAKANDI: In view of opening up of inter-state borders of Assam with other North Eastern States on Sunday, the Hailakandi police administration tightened security at the inter-state and inter-district border check points.

Disclosing this, Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath said the inter state and inter district border check points have been reactivated since Sunday morning with deployment of medical surveillance teams following opening up of the inter state borders of Assam with neighbouring states for movement of people stuck due to the lockdown.

Police personnel and medical teams have been deployed at Katakhal and at Thundapur under Panchgram Police Station bordering Cachar and Karimganj districts, at Bilaipur-Dholcherra BoP, Bandukmara and Ramnathpur check posts along Assam-Mizoram inter-state border. With a view to ensuring enforcement of lockdown rules, the Hailakandi district police resorted to harsh measures.

Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath disclosed that 20 arrests have been made and 23 vehicles seized for lockdown violations on Saturday. Ra 4,000 has been realized by way of fines.

"All must be aware of the fact that maintaining social distancing and avoiding gatherings are a must under COVID-19 guidelines. Apart from this, Section 144 CrPC that prohibits the assembling of five or more persons is in force in the district," Nath said. The SP urged the people to adhere to the lockdown guidelines and to maintain social distancing to break the novel coronavirus chain.

He warned that police would have to resort to punitive measures to enforce the lockdown keeping in view the grave threat the dreaded virus poses to the entire mankind. 805 persons have come back home from different parts of the state in the wake of inter-district movement since April 25.

The health authorities here have put 380 persons under home quarantine for 28 days and the process is on to quarantine the remaining persons. "To ensure everyone's well being and safety, persons coming from various parts of the state in the last few days and those who will arrive from different states of the North East to Hailakandi district would be put under quarantine," said Joint Director of Health Services, Dr.Ramesh Chandra Dwivedy, adding that there are some who give misleading travel history for fear of stigmatisation.

Meanwhile, nine swab samples tested negative on Sunday. Of the 255 swab samples, 254 have turned out to be negative with one person succumbing to COVID-19 infection.
