National People’s Party candidate Nazia Yasmin Mazumder files nomination

Special Correspondent

Silchar: Nazia Yasmin Mazumder, NPP (National People’s Party) candidate, filed her nomination on Tuesday before the Returning Officer, Laya Madduri. Along with her were Misbahul Islam Laskar, former Congress State Minister, and Abdul Shukkur Barbhuiya, social activist. She too hogged the limelight as a large number of party workers and supporters followed her in the rally that started from her residence at Sonai Road to converge in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner. After submitting her nomination, she addressed the media and workers like a seasoned politician. There was enough reason for her to look brimming with aplomb as she was ready to throw gauntlet before her adversaries, BJP and Congress.

But she was more critical of Congress than BJP. She even marginalized Congress and said BJP would be her nearest rival in the poll of April 18. She would work for development of all sections of people, move for empowerment of women and ameliorate the sufferings of the deprived classes. For her, discrimination on the ground of creed and caste is a great crime for a public leader. Why she has decided to contest is being explained to people by her leaders at different meetings. Nazia did not mince words when she hit out at Sushmita Dev, describing her failure as an MP. Sushmita completed 5 years, but her contributions towards the development of her constituency is disappointing.

Rs 7 crore of her development fund has gone back. Her role on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill came in for sharp criticism. Sushmita speaks one thing before Hindus, another thing before Muslims. She herself is confused or pretends to be confused. This itself is a tell-tale of her performance as an MP. Nazia did not spare Sontosh Mohan Dev, 7 time MP and central minister. What he did for Barak Valley, except promoting dynastic rule, she asked. Muslims have been simply exploited as vote-bank for electoral gains by Congress. This is not going to happen again.

Nazia must have been emboldened and overwhelmed with the presence of a good number of disgruntled Congress, AIUDF and AGP leaders and workers in her rally. Badaruddin Ajmal’s tacit understanding with Congress and AGP’ tie up with BJP have left many of their workers shocked and unhappy. They have decided to back Nazia. In fact, after deciding to contest as an Independent, Nazia got nod from Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, and Chairman of NPP, to join his party and stake her claim for Silchar Lok Sabha seat. Sangma has also agreed to campaign for her, pointed out Nazia Yasmin Mazumder.
