Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) Missive To CM On Plethora of Issues

Silchar: Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) Cachar district committee has in its missive to the Chief Minister of Assam on various issues affecting the normal life of Barak people demanded of him to initiate remedial measures. One of the serious problems brought into focus is the frustrating medical services across the district of Cachar. The scenario on this front is not any way different in all the rural and urban health centres including civil and medical college and hospital. Their services to people are crippled by shortage of doctors, nurses, health workers, necessary apparatus and medicines.

Shortage of beds, the missive continues, compel the medical and paramedical staff accommodate patients on floors and treat them against all human and medical ethics. Quite sad, even after 50 years of the establishment of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, the departments of neurology, urology and nephrology are yet to come up. Patients have no other option than to move outside the district for treatment which is not only expensive but for many beyond their reach.

The syndrome of shortage of staff has also been adversely impacting the functioning of schools, colleges and various state government offices. SUCI advocates for filling up the vacancies and creating job opportunities for the educated unemployed. This issue has to be seriously addressed, considering the ever increasing index of unemployment in the state as a whole. The revival of the closed paper mill at Panchgram has also been strongly pleaded which besides absorbing the starving employees will also pave the way for economic rejuvenation in the district.

Under Right to Education Act 2009, the pass fail system has virtually been given a go by from Class 1 to Class VIII which has resulted in decline in the quality and standard of basic and primary education with its cascading effect on higher stages of education. The demand is for reintroduction of pass fail system from Class 1 in the overall interests of students. The disparity existing in the wages of the tea workers of Barak and Brahmaputra valleys should be removed for the sake of justice and on human ground. This commitment was made by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi during his public meetings.

The spectre of NRC continues to haunt the people of Barak Valley who are subjected to harassment in the name of re verification. They are being served with notices to go to NSKs outside the district. Even those whose names are on the final draft are also served with notices for re verification. This is most unfortunate and has to stop, pointed out SUCI missive signed by Bhabatosh Chakraborty, secretary SUCI Cachar district. After submitting the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar on the public demands for their resolution for onward transmission to the Chief Minister of Assam, the SUCI leaders and workers staging protest demonstration before the DC establishment.
