Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) Engaged To Clean Railway Stations In Hailakandi

Hailakandi: In a first of its kind initiative in the North East, women Self Help Groups (SHGs) have been engaged in cleaning of railway stations in Hailakandi district.

An MoU was signed here on Tuesday between the Hailakandi district administration represented by Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli and NF Railway by Area Manager S.Umesh on Swachh Railway Station initiative paving the way for handing over the cleaning job of railway stations to SHGs of Hailakandi district.

Deputy Commissioner Jalli formally inaugurated the swasth railway station initiative in collaboration with SHGs, Hailakandi district administration, NF Railway, DAY-NULM and Day-NRLM at Hailakandi Railway Station.

“Involvement of women SHGs in cleaning and other services of railways will provide scope for employment generation leading to women empowerment,” said Jalli. Several women SHGs have been engaged in the cleanliness drive of Hailakandi Railway Station and other stations falling in the district.

Hailakandi Railway Station has been handed over to Loknath SHG under NULM, Lala Railway Station to Maa Manosha SHG under NULM and Panchgram Railway Station to Nabonita SHG under NRLM.

It may be mentioned that in a meeting with officials of NF Railway and IRCTC authorities that took place at DC’s office on July 28 last, Jalli persuaded them to engage SHGs in cleaning of railway stations and other services which would provide means of livelihood to them.

The Deputy Commissioner also called upon the catering arm of railways to empanel the women SHGs of Hailakandi district to provide authentic regional food cooked in hygienic conditions at certain stations, including Panchgram and Hailakandi.
