World Environment Day to be held in the grandest manner possible by Cachar district administration

Silchar: Cachar district administration is all set to observe World Environment Day in the grandest manner possible which falls on June 5. A series of events will be held which will start from June 4. This information was shared by Laya Madduri, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, at a press meet held at her conference hall in Silchar on Thursday. “Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is most likely to attend and participate in the day-long which will be held at Police Parade Ground here. On June 4, a massive bicycle rally for spreading awareness regarding environment and environmental protection will also be taken out in the morning,” said Laya Madduri.

Laya Madduri also urged upon all to actively participate in the programme to make it a grand success. “We want to reach the target of planting 1 million saplings here in this season. This year’s theme is air pollution and we have made all the arrangements in this regard. We need mass support and participation. ‘Each one, plant one’ is our motto. There are NGOs, schools, organizations, groups and associations etc. who all have come forward to extend their helping hands. Whoever is committed to conserving the environment, he or she or they will be heartily welcomed,” she added to say.

There would be science exhibitions, a mass demonstration on solid waste management and segregation and a host of cultural events will mark the occasion. Sunny Deo Choudhury, DFO, Cachar, said that there are 40 forest villages in the district of Cachar and it is necessary to preserve and conserve it. “Participants of the cultural events will depict the life, culture, tradition and lifestyle of people living in those forest villages. Planting of 1 million saplings will be a great achievement indeed,” said Sunny Deo Choudhury.

Laya Madduri also addressed issues related to the pollution which is caused by littering. “Silchar Municipal Board has decided to impose fines on people found dumping garbage and waste products and materials here and there. Any sort of littering will not be tolerated or excused. Once this by-law gets passed, fines will be imposed. Littering, spitting, urinating and defecating in the open are offences for which the offenders should be brought to task. I appreciate the initiative taken by the Board. Proper segregation of wastes will also be carried out on a regular basis. Change is possible only if there are conviction and clarity of thought,” said Laya Madduri.
