SILCHAR: Despite the arrest and seizure of leaders and cadres of different underground outfits in Lakhipur subdivision of Cachar, bordering Manipur, the movement of militants has not been totally contained. They continue to wander in the wilderness and often make forays in inhabited areas with ulterior motives. But, to say the security forces and intelligence agencies sit finger-crossed will be a negation of fact. The topography and hilly terrain and emotional base in tribal belts, often at gunpoint, provide some leeway to the underground elements.

It was due to the close surveillance by a divisional police officer and officer in charge of Jirighat police outpost that (ZUF) Zeliangrong United Front leader identified as Gangdun Rongmei (56) was arrested on Friday night. He was taken into dragnet by the combined team of Jirighat police station led by Manoj Rajbongshi and 37 Assam Rifle ā€œCā€ Company. After the continuous hunt, he was spotted at Namdailong village.

Immediately, the joint team of security forces launched the operation after cordoning off the village in jungle-infested areas under Jirighat police station. It was around 1 PM when Gangdun was under siege after all his escape routes were sealed.

One .22 pistol with ammunition was recovered from his possession. A case was registered against him in Jiright police station vide no. 35/19 u/s 121/121 (A)/120 (B) 384 IPC R W section 25 (1 a) Arms Act.
