Guwahati: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), led by its supremo Badruddin Ajmal, staged a demonstration in front of the Janata Bhawan here on Sunday to protest against continuation of eviction drives in some areas amidst the critical flood situation.

The AIUDF also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in this connection.

The memorandum stated that the Karimganj district administration has initiated eviction at several villages - Kadamoni, Isakhauri, Isarpar, Radamadabpur, Tejpur, Kotonpur etc., - under Patharkandi Revenue Circle in the middle of the ongoing flood situation, "pushing those families into great disaster".

The memorandum claimed that some families facing eviction have had land pattas of their own for a long time.

The AIUDF mentioned in the memorandum that eviction notices have been also sent to inhabitants of Khudigaon Part-Il and Alamganj Part-IX of the Dhubri district without making prior arrangement for their rehabilitation.

"Most of the inhabitants are from economically weaker sections and the inhuman eviction drive is a direct attack on the right to shelter of these people. The right to shelter has been held to be a fundamental right under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution," the memorandum stated.

The memorandum urged the Chief Minister to intervene in the matter and immediately stop the eviction drives. It further urged the Chief Minister to ensure payment of compensation and resettlement of the families that have been already evicted.
