Guwahati: The World Bank-aided Central Government's Neer Nirmal Pariyojona (NNP) water supply project at Chandrapur has been idle for the past three months.

The construction of the Rs 268.78-crore project started in 2015. The cost of the project escalated later to Rs 348 crore. The PHE, the nodal department of the project, opened the project partially on March 8, 2018. The project aims at covering 42 villages under Chandrapur, West Mayang, Panikhaiti and Amching gaon panchayats. However, the project has been lying idle for the past three months.

A resident of Chandrapur said, "After the partial opening of the project, the PHE supplied water to the villagers after an interval of four to five days. However, we have not been getting water from the project for three months. The PHE collected around Rs 66 lakh to provide water connections to the families. And the partially-opened plant is not yet complete. The project was to have six reservoirs. However, the works of the would-be reservoir at Bonda Chapaidong are yet to start."

According to sources, the World Bank dissociated itself from the project that would now come under the JJM (Jal Jeevan Mission). The people demand the authorities complete the project without further delay.
